Recently, the University commissioned a comprehensive, independent analysis by Applied Economics, a specialized economics consulting firm, to determine its current and ongoing financial impact. 

The study revealed that Midwestern University has had a far-reaching effect on job creation, business development, personal income, tax revenues, and construction expenditures in the local economy.

Midwestern University had an overall economic impact of over $767 million on the Maricopa County economy in 2024.

Employment Impact

$121.9 Million, 990 jobsThe University’s 990 full- and part-time employees contributed $121.9 million annually to the local payroll, while their spending further boosted the economy by $173.7 million.
2,000+ jobs – $138.6 Million in payrollThe University supported over 2,000 jobs and $138.6 million in payroll at other local businesses supported by the University, their employees, students, and campus visitors.

Local Business Impact

$41.2 MillionThrough their spending, the more than 3,700 students at Midwestern supported jobs and created $41.2 million in labor income at local businesses in 2024. 
$173.7 MillionMidwestern University’s faculty and staff further boosted the economy by $273.7 million.

Tax Impact

$22.4 MillionMidwestern indirectly generated an estimated $22.4 million in state and local tax revenues. Employees, students, and visitors created $6.9 million in estimated state sales taxes and $4.5 million in estimated local sales taxes in 2023-24. Estimated local property taxes to the city, county, school district and other local taxing districts totaled $5.5 million, and Midwestern University supported $5.4 million in estimated state income tax revenues in 2023-24. Visitor hotel spending is also subject to local lodging tax, generating an additional $178,000 in tax revenues to the city of Glendale.
